Surrounded by beautiful mountains, wilderness areas, and national parks, Montrose is a gem on Colorado's Western Slope. The home-rule municipality is the county seat and most populous city in Montrose County and has a population of around 20,000 residents. The town is in the upper Uncompahgre Valley and is a waypoint for the surrounding recreation industry. Montrose is an entrance to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park just east of town.

Montrose has a traditional grid layout with various businesses in the city's core. Several beautiful neighborhoods are surrounding the business district with single-family homes, townhouses, multi-level homes and condominiums, and a few permanently placed mobile homes and trailers. Properties and structures vary greatly in size and sale price - ranging from smaller one-bedroom homes, condos, and apartments to more significant, private homes.

Montrose has numerous planned subdivisions with beautiful homes in all shapes and sizes. There are many new builds, custom homes, and empty lots to design and build the residence of your dreams. Montrose River Meadows on the north end of town has homes for sale for around $110,000 near the Montrose airport and further west along Lasalle Road. Subdivisions like the Bear Creek subdivision and Cimarron Creek Community have numerous homes in the $100,000 to $150,000 range. There are move-in-ready model homes, or choose a lot and select a floor plan. Or relocate your existing home. You have the best of both worlds in this area: secluded from city life yet conveniently located close to downtown Montrose. At Cimarron Creek, enjoy mature landscaping, walking paths, a community room, community garden, and RV storage. The community is well-maintained and pet friendly.

There are terrific custom-built homes all over town. Many homes in Montrose have two or three bedrooms, but some have four or five bedrooms. Many are light and bright with an updated floor plan and lots of space for growing families. Homes have between 1,500 and 2,000 square feet of living space with additional outdoor areas like a yard or shed. Some choose to live outside the city limits because you pay fewer taxes.

Montrose has carved its notch in pop culture, appearing in various TV shows and movies over the decades. Scenes from the original version of True Grit, starring John Wayne, were filmed in Montrose and the surrounding area. Several episodes of the TV series Then Came Bronson, starring Michael Parks, were filmed in and around Montrose. The 2011 video game Homefront is also set mainly in Montrose.

A city for the future, Montrose has established several miles of fiber optic internet service and boasts fast internet speeds throughout the community.

Montrose is home to a few major engineering projects, like Gunnison Tunnel. In October 2020, the city announced a multi-million-dollar river restoration project along the Uncompahgre River, including a $785,00 grant from the Colorado Water Conservation Board.

Montrose Regional Airport serves Montrose, with regional service to Denver. Montrose sees heavy seasonal service as the nearest major airport to the Telluride Ski Area. The city has a city-run bus service with three lines running during weekdays.
